Does TikTok download open in another tab? See what to do

Updated March 17, 2026

In many browsers, especially iPhone and some mobile browsers, the download button may open the video or audio in a new tab instead of saving automatically. In most cases, this is browser behavior and not an immediate tool error.

1. Why does this happen

When the browser interprets the file as playable media, it may first open an internal player. This is common in Safari, Chrome mobile and can also happen on the computer depending on the browser settings.

2. What to do on iPhone

  1. Let the new tab open completely.
  2. Use Safari's share menu.
  3. Choose the option to save the file on the device or in Files.
  4. Only close the tab after confirming where the file was saved.

3. What to do on Android

  1. Wait for the file to load in the new tab.
  2. Open the browser menu.
  3. Use the download or save option.
  4. Then check the Downloads folder or gallery.

4. What to do on the PC

If the file opens in a new tab, use the browser menu to save the video locally or right-click when that makes sense. In many cases the browser also shows the item in the download history.

Common error: close the new tab too soon. When this happens, the browser loses the file context and the user ends up repeating the process unnecessarily.
